OMG, what died in that bottle?

I purchased Fish Emulsion today, on the advice of a fellow gardener.  I read the bottle and shook it up per the directions.  Then I opened it, only to see a foul greenish/brown…sludge.  That is the only way to describe it.  I filled up my watering can and then prepared to make the solution.  I poured a wee bit into the cap and something possessed me.

I had to SMELL it.

I don’t have words to adequately explain the foulness of the smell.  It smelled like low tide on the hottest summer day mixed with the foulest dumpster smell ever.  And this was the deodorized fish emulsion.  I can’t even imagine what the full odor stuff smells like.

Of course, it looked like toxic waste, so I don’t know why I’m surprised that it smelled nasty.

I dumped it into the water and gave it a swirl, holding my nose the whole time.  I ended up using it on my Dwarf Alberta Spruce that is just full of new growth.   As long as the fish emulsion works, I will keep using it.

I’ll just be sure to wear noseplugs.
