Updates

I managed to kill my wee herb garden that was on my west facing patio.  There was just too much sun and by the time I realized it, they were dead.  I ended up losing 2 thyme, 4 lavender, 1 rosemary and 1dill.  At least I did have the lavender long enough to harvest some flowers from it, so I’m making progress compared to years past.

I also killed my ‘Red Spikes’ Dracaena.  It also got too much sun, even though it was located in the office in an east facing window.

I’m keeping my fingers crossed that I’m not going to kill anymore plants for a while.

Dill! Aphids!

I have a lovely wee herb garden in my kitchen window.  I have a dill plant and I’d noticed it was getting odd little bright green bumps on the stem.  I didn’t really pay much attention to it until I was doing my weekly pruning.  To my distress, those little bumps were aphids!

I don’t know what I was thinking, thinking that the bumps weren’t a big deal.  I’m not sure where the aphids came from as I did quarentine the dill before adding it to my garden.  Not wanting to put chemical insecticides on the dill, I took it outside and hit it with the hose, using a strong mist setting.  That dislodged the aphids and as the plant is still growing well, I left it outside.  I also checked my other herbs and thankfully, the aphids hadn’t migrated to those.

I plan on checking the dill in a few days, just to make sure I got them all off.  I don’t know what it is about bugs on plants, but they totally freak me out.  Aphids on dill, mealybugs on various things, evil scale, aphids on the bamboo…uggg, they are just wrong!
