More than you could ever want to know

I have a lot of plants. At last count, I had 60 plants in my house. Every south and west facing windowsill is crowded with them, almost every flat surface has plants sitting on it.  Of course, during the late spring and summer, a lot of these will be going outside. But until then, every available surface with decent light has become a home for plants. As I sit at my desk writing this, there are ten plants on and around my desk. Five different Dracaena and a Pilea, Calathea, Hypoestes, Peperomia, and a mini Rose, which is still thriving, amazingly enough!

You might be asking yourself, “What qualifications does she have to write a blog about plants?” The answer to that is a three-parter.

First, I grew up in a family that loved plants and some of that knowledge has rubbed off on me. Granted, I’m not really into most flowering plants nor veggies, but I still learned a lot while sat at my mum’s or Grandma’s knee while they were working with their garden.  While I learned a lot from my family, I hated everything about gardening.  It took many years for me to gain an appreciation for it.

Secondly, I majored in Biology in college and a necessary part of that was Botany classes. Everything from Bot 101 to Bot 450 – Principles of Plant Taxonomy.  I learned a lot of technical things, but I still didn’t enjoy it at all.   I thought that I’d lost a lot of the information gleaned from those classes when I left school but as I got more into plants as a hobby, I found that a lot of it came back with slight prodding.

Finally, I love to learn new things and I love sharing what I learn and that is the point of this blog.  I anticipate posting information about the plants I have, but also interesting gardening related things and photographs.

I’m not sure of the format yet; that will be a work in progress I’m assuming. There will be pics posted – some that I have taken, others that I have not. I will strive to give the best and most correct information that I can and if you have any questions, comments or more info about something I post, please share!

I will try to roll out the first “real” post shortly.
